What do we plant in our pastures? We are asked constantly what we plant in our pasture for grazing. This year starting in July we will be using over 20 verities of forage. We will be using forage that can grow in our area and that is healthy and safe for our goats. If you want to plant forage as we do you need to research what grows in "your area". Make sure it is not poisonous to goats. There are a lot of plants that can kill or do harm such as liver damage or abortion if feed to goats. There are many plants that will bloat goats. Also make sure you plant forage that is balanced nutritionally. BEFORE planting make sure you have the analyzes of your pastures soil, not all soils are the same. Also just because it looks good for goats does not mean they will eat it. There are many types of forage goats will not eat. If you have a small amount of acres make sure to use forage that can be grazed for longer periods of time. Some forage can only be grazed for a few hours a day while other forage can be grazed all the time. What works for us here may not work for you. We have very mild winters, hot summers with lot of humidity, and also deal with sea salt in the air from the coast. All these things affect what we plant and when.
We are asked constantly if we do outside breeding or if we will flush one of our does. Below will answer these questions as well as others asked about our goats. Why do we body clip our show wethers before selling them? We body clip all show wethers prior to you picking because the hair can hide faults or lack of muscle. We have nothing to hide from our buyers. We will post all views (front, rear, and side) of the show wethers so you can see exactly what you are buying. We post starting at a few weeks old and updated photos every week as they grow.
Outside breeding: We will not do out side breeding for we have a CL free herd and will not risk exposure to CL or other possible diseases. We can breed a doe bought from us prior to leaving our ranch for a Buck fee and boarding cost. We will not breed during the summer months. Flushing our does: No Flushing for Us and we WILL NOT buy a doe who has been flushed. We won't jeopardize our does health flushing them. See article By www.jackmauldin.com/no_flushing_for_us
